Filmmaker Zach Cregger says his latest hit Weapons could have looked very different if not for a cascade of setbacks that forced a near-complete recast. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cregger revealed that the film’s original lineup was replaced after the writers’ strike and Pedro Pascal’s sudden scheduling conflict derailed production.
I had a whole different cast for this movie. And then we had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal’s schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie.
Cregger said
The original cast included Pascal, Brian Tyree Henry, Renate Reinsve, and Austin Abrams. While most departed, Abrams remained the only original cast member to stay attached to the project.
He hung tough with me. That’s my dude right there.
Cregger said of Abrams, who plays James, a homeless man struggling with drug addiction.
In the finished film, Abrams stars alongside Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, who took over the role of Archer a father searching for his missing child originally intended for Pascal.
Abrams explained why he chose not to walk away during the production shake-up.
I loved the part and I didn’t wanna let it go. I’d seen Barbarian with a friend. I remember when it cut to Justin Long in the car, I just knew I loved whoever made that movie. I was able to get in contact with Zach, and then it turned out he was making something. He thought I was a good fit for it, potentially…. I loved the part and I didn’t wanna let it go. So I just really held on ’cause I really wanted to do it.
he told Entertainment Weekly
The gamble appears to have paid off. Weapons has earned strong reviews from both critics and audiences, pulling in $42.5 million domestically and $27.5 million internationally in its opening weekend a $70 million global debut that far exceeded projections. Made for $38 million, the film is already on track for a highly profitable run as post-release buzz continues to build.
