Just days before its scheduled premiere, Apple TV+ abruptly pulled the limited series The Savant from release without explanation. Now, despite the delay, the show has received high praise in an early review from Variety, where it is described as “essential television.”
The series was originally slated to debut on September 26. Apple’s only comment on the postponement was brief:
After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone The Savant. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.
Lead star Jessica Chastain later revealed that she was “not aligned” with Apple’s decision to withhold the premiere.
In its review, Variety critic Aramide Tinubu offered strong praise for the show, writing:
- “The Savant is brilliant and unsettling”
- “The series is riveting throughout, but it works best when depicting the cost of discriminatory speech and cruelty”
- “In these fraught political times, The Savant is essential television”
- “Most disturbing is the series’ depiction of how this type of violence and groupthink spreads. The Savant unsettlingly holds up a mirror to the country, showing viewers what it will cost if we continue down this path.”
The review, curiously, is currently viewable through Apple News but not on Variety’s own website. It carries an editor’s note acknowledging the delay: “After this review was scheduled to publish, Apple TV+ postponed ‘The Savant’ until a later date.”
Reaction online has been divided. One top comment noted Apple’s caution amid rising political tensions but argued the series should not remain shelved indefinitely. The commenter suggested Apple could add a content disclaimer, similar to advisories used for shows tackling sensitive issues, making clear the production “reject[s] all forms of political violence” while providing resources on de-escalation.
As of now, Apple has offered no further update on when The Savant will be released. The Apple TV app continues to list the show simply as “Coming At a Later Date.”
