Jessica Williams, star of Apple TV+’s Shrinking, has teased Brett Goldstein’s return for season 3, hinting at an important development for her character Gaby.
Williams plays Gaby, a friend, colleague, and former romantic partner of Jimmy (Jason Segel). Goldstein, who also serves as an executive producer on the acclaimed comedy-drama that stars Harrison Ford, portrays Louis — the man who killed Jimmy’s wife Tia (Lilan Bowden) in a drunk-driving accident.
Why Gaby and Louis Haven’t Met Yet
Speaking to Deadline, Williams explained why her character and Louis did not share any dialogue in earlier seasons. As Tia’s best friend, Gaby’s reaction to Louis would differ significantly from Jimmy and Alice’s (Lukita Maxwell). Williams felt strongly that avoiding contact between the two was true to Gaby’s perspective.
Them not speaking was important to me, because I always felt like Gaby would feel some type of way about meeting him. I think she would process that differently than Jimmy and Alice’s characters. We also ended up finagling why Gaby has no contact with Louie for that specific reason. All I can say is stay tuned for Season 3, because we do get to have Brett back for those things we couldn’t fit into Season 2. I can’t promise, but hopefully, there’s a really much-needed conversation between Gaby and Louie in Season 3.
Season 2’s Ending and the Role of Louis
Season 2 concluded on a deeply emotional note for Louis, who was on the verge of tragedy until Jimmy intervened to save him. This moment shifted the dynamic between the two men and offered audiences a more nuanced view of Louis’ place in their lives.
Throughout the season, Louis’ integration into Jimmy and Alice’s world was explored, particularly through the efforts of Brian (Michael Urie), who delivered one of the show’s most memorable monologues about Louis’ state of mind. Despite these storylines, Gaby remained notably absent from Louis’ arc.
Season 3 is now expected to bridge that gap, providing space for Gaby and Louis to finally confront one another as Louis navigates life after prison and faces the consequences of his actions.
What a Gaby–Louis Confrontation Could Mean
Shrinking has consistently balanced emotional storytelling with sardonic humor, living up to co-creator Bill Lawrence’s signature style. Goldstein, who earned acclaim as the gruff Roy Kent in Lawrence’s Ted Lasso, has brought similar emotional depth to Louis, portraying him as a flawed yet compelling figure whose path to redemption is central to the show’s narrative.
Allowing Gaby and Louis to finally interact will likely bring a heavier emotional toll, especially given Gaby’s closeness to Tia. Their first conversation could become a pivotal moment in the healing process not only for Gaby but also for Jimmy and Alice, who continue to grapple with their grief.
For fans invested in Louis’ redemption, this potential meeting may mark a crucial step forward one that could redefine relationships and deepen the emotional core of Shrinking as it moves into its third season.
