Fans have wanted a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for years, but Sarah Michelle Gellar had always said she didn’t want to return to the show. But that changed earlier this year.
In a new talk with Variety at the Neiman Marcus Celebrates 2025 Fantasy Gifts event, Gellar said she should not have said she wouldn’t return. The sequel show, which has been talked about for years, was officially confirmed earlier this year. Since then, the pilot has already been filmed, and Gellar hinted that Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale will be great for longtime fans as well as people who are new to the universe.
It was not a place that I ever saw myself, so it definitely felt very surreal. But this is why you never say never, and I’m sure I said ‘never’ many times and I’ve learned my lesson because I’m sure someday you’re gonna go back and find all the times I said, ‘No, never. I’m too old. It’ll be Buffy with a walker.’
Gellar said about returning to Buffy
The actress repeated her earlier comments about how Oscar-winning director and executive producer Chloé Zhao got her to return to Sunnydale.

Chloé had this idea in a world and the passion with which she spoke both about her idea and the show made me realize that now more than ever we need those heroes to believe in. It’s tough times for everybody right now, and I think people feel more isolated and more alone and we live in an incredibly digital society. But ultimately, the more and more technologically connected we get, the more disconnected we’re becoming, and so found family and those true moments become more and more important.
The Buffy world is very detailed. The show started in 1997, based on the 1992 movie of the same name disgraced creator Joss Whedon wrote. After Buffy became a big hit, the franchise expanded with the spinoff Angel, which aired during the original show starting Season 3. After it ended, there were many books, comics, and other media, with some stories treated as canon.

But according to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s new interview, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, which follows new slayer Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, can also be for people who never watched past shows.
This is a show that will cater definitely to the [original fans]. There will always be Easter eggs because there was Easter eggs in the original… but we also want to introduce it to people that maybe haven’t seen the show.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer follow-up show, New Sunnydale, does not have a release date yet.
