The Resident Evil franchise has broken a long standing record even before the release of its next major installment, Resident Evil Requiem. While the game won’t launch until February, the wait between mainline entries has already surpassed every previous gap in the series’ history.
Following the success of Resident Evil Village, Capcom is returning players to Raccoon City with a brand new protagonist named Grace Ashcroft. Anticipation for Requiem has been steadily building, but as of yesterday, the gap between Village and Requiem became the longest ever between two mainline Resident Evil games.
According to Reddit user edwinstone, it has now been 1,577 days since the release of Resident Evil Village, breaking the previous record of 1,575 days between Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil 7. In 2023, Capcom did release the Resident Evil 4 remake, meaning the franchise hasn’t been on a full hiatus during this extended period.
RE9 Sets Record for Longest Gap Between Releases
Edwinstone’s calculation depends on counting Resident Evil – Code: Veronica as a mainline title. Despite the absence of a number in its title, many fans accept this classification because Code: Veronica directly followed the narratives of Resident Evil 1 and 2, distinguishing it from the franchise’s many spin-offs.
By the time Resident Evil Requiem reaches store shelves assuming no delays the final tally will stand at 1,757 days. “Nine more days, and Capcom would have started to look patriotic,” edwinstone noted, joking about the number’s association with American independence.
Could Resident Evil Requiem Be Worth the Wait?
The nearly five-year gap is significant, but Capcom has worked hard in recent years to rebuild player trust in the franchise. Resident Evil 7 redefined the series with a stronger focus on horror, while Village expanded its scope without overreaching. In addition, Capcom’s remakes of earlier titles have largely set the industry standard for how to successfully revisit classic games.
Requiem promises to continue that momentum by offering both first-person and third-person modes, appealing to fans split over the series’ modern direction. The game will also explore a new storyline centered around Grace Ashcroft while reintroducing players to Raccoon City, one of the franchise’s most iconic settings.
Of course, challenges remain. Capcom must strike the right balance between fresh storytelling and classic elements to satisfy both newcomers and long-time fans. There are also concerns about potential technical issues, given that Monster Hunter Wilds another major Capcom release faced notable problems on PC.
Regardless of these uncertainties, one thing is already clear: Resident Evil Requiem has set a new record for the franchise, for better or worse.
