Only Murders in the Building is heading overseas. After Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) traveled from New York to California in Season 4, the trio is expected to take their mystery work to a different continent, I’m told. The hit Hulu comedy, which ends Season 5 tomorrow, Oct. 28, has not been officially picked up for Season 6 yet.
But when it is — which is almost certain because the show is still very popular — it would be set mainly outside the U.S. for the first time, sources said. Only Murders in the Building seems headed to Europe, with London believed to be the Season 6 location. The likely move across the Atlantic might be hinted at in the Season 5 finale, which premieres Tuesday on Hulu.
Charles, Oliver and Mabel, amateur detectives and podcasters, would easily fit into a historic European building since their beloved Arconia already has that look with its Italian Renaissance Revival style. It’s not known yet if the new season’s murder would actually happen overseas; all previous deaths happened inside The Arconia.
A Season 6 set in London would mean the next seasons of the two most popular current murder mystery shows, Only Murders and The White Lotus, would be just a train ride apart. As Deadline exclusively reported, Mike White’s HBO series is heading to France for Season 4.
The current fifth season of Only Murders in the Building is about the killing of Lester, The Arconia’s longtime doorman. So far, the case has led to an illegal casino and mafia connections — with Bobby Cannavale and Téa Leoni playing characters in that plot — plus three powerful billionaires played by Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz and Logan Lerman. Other major new Season 5 actors include Keegan Michael Key, Jermaine Fowler, Beanie Feldstein and Dianne Wiest.
Along with the main trio of Martin, Short and Gomez, Michael Cyril Creighton returns as Howard, plus Jackie Hoffman (Uma), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“Detective Donna Williams”), Meryl Streep (Loretta), Richard Kind (Vince Fish) and Nathan Lane (Teddy Dimas). Only Murders in the Building was co-created by Martin & showrunner John Hoffman who executive produce with Short, Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith and JJ Philbin. 20th Television is the studio.
