Malcolm McDowell isn’t streaming Emily in Paris and he’s not afraid to admit it, even though his daughter-in-law, Lily Collins, is the face of the global Netflix hit.
“To be honest with you, it’s not my kind of thing, and Lily knows that,” the 82-year-old actor told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview. Collins, who married McDowell’s son Charlie McDowell in September 2021, leads the popular series created by Darren Star.
But while McDowell says the show doesn’t appeal to him personally, he made it clear his admiration for Collins has no limits.
But I’m the biggest fan of my daughter-in-law. I think she’s absolutely one of the great actresses.
the Et Tu star said.
Collins plays Emily Cooper, an ambitious American navigating her career at a French marketing firm while juggling love, friendships and personal growth. The series debuted in October 2020 and is currently filming its fifth season, with a release date yet to be announced.
McDowell praised Collins’ natural charisma, describing her presence as unmatched.
As far as I’m concerned, when she’s on the screen, there’s nobody else on it, because she’s not only a good actress, but she has a beautiful quality. I suppose, it’s a sort of charisma.
he explained.
He went on to credit Collins for having an impact beyond television.
The aura around [her] is so beautiful. She has such a beautiful quality. I’m sure [Paris tourism] has gone up so much from people in the United States watching and going, ‘Yeah, let’s go to Paris.’
he said
Earlier this year, Collins and Charlie, 42, announced the arrival of their first child, daughter Tove Jane, born via surrogate.
Both Collins and Charlie hail from celebrated Hollywood families. McDowell is the father of Charlie with ex-wife Mary Steenburgen, while Collins is the daughter of musician Phil Collins and actress Jill Tavelman. McDowell has previously said he has a “fantastic” relationship with Steenburgen and her husband, Ted Danson.
He has also compared Collins’ screen allure to that of a legendary star. “She has that Audrey Hepburn kind of thing,” McDowell told PEOPLE.
McDowell currently appears in Et Tu, which is now available to stream and purchase. All four seasons of Emily in Paris are streaming on Netflix.
