Jason Momoa is stepping back into his iconic role as Duncan Idaho, and he’s making a dramatic transformation to do it. The actor shared a video on Instagram showing himself shaving his beard for the first time in six years ahead of production on Dune: Part Three.
“Only for you, Denis,” Momoa says in the video, referring to Dune director Denis Villeneuve. Moments later, he adds, “Goddamnit! I hate it.”
Momoa originally portrayed Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part One (2021), where the character serves as a swordmaster and loyal mentor to Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet). Duncan sacrifices himself late in the film to help Paul and his mother Jessica escape a deadly attack. Although Momoa did not appear in Dune: Part Two, the character returns as a clone in Frank Herbert’s original novels though it remains unclear if Villeneuve will follow that storyline in the third installment.
The upcoming Dune: Part Three will see the return of several core cast members, including Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh. Joining the ensemble are Nakoa-Wolf Momoa—Momoa’s teenage son with actress Lisa Bonet and Silo star Ida Brooke. The young actors are set to portray Leto II and Ghanima, the twin children of Paul and Chani.
A rude awakening is what he’s in for. He’s into the workforce for the first time. It’s going to be good. He did it on his own. I don’t want to help him, and he’s done it all on his own, and good for him.
Momoa recently told Extra about his son’s casting.
You want your children to be better than you, and I really, actually believe he is. I couldn’t do what he’s doing at his age. There’s no way I could sit in a room with Denis Villeneuve and hold my own. I was on Baywatch at 19. He’s 16 and holding shit down with Denis Villeneuve.
