After a two-year break, Gen V is officially returning to Prime Video this week, and critics are already calling it the franchise’s strongest outing yet. The superhero spinoff of The Boys has debuted with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 10 early reviews, marking the highest-rated start in the entire universe.
If the score holds, Gen V Season 2 will top every other installment in the franchise. The first season concluded with a 97% Certified Fresh rating, while The Boys Season 3 currently holds second place with 98%. Even if the number dips in the coming weeks, Season 2 is on track to remain one of the best-reviewed chapters in the saga. Fans will get their chance to weigh in when the series premieres on Prime Video on September 17.
Critics who previewed all eight episodes have praised the balance of raw character drama with the biting satire the franchise is known for. Performances have been singled out for acclaim, particularly the main cast led by Jaz Sinclair. The new season also tackles the real-life tragedy of Chance Perdomo’s passing, whose character Andre Anderson had been central to the story. Meanwhile, newcomer Hamish Linklater has been highlighted for his performance as Cipher, with IGN describing the season as “a wild ride bolstered by a Homelander-worthy main villain.” Variety noted the season “rests on the shoulders of its heroes, well-intentioned people struggling to tell real heroism from the pre-packaged kind.”
Returning Cast and New Faces
The second season returns to Godolkin University, now under the shadow of a new and more sinister leadership. Familiar faces include Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, Lizze Broadway as Emma Meyer, Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap, London Thor and Derek Luh as Jordan Li, Asa Germann as Sam Riordan, and Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity. Joining them are Hamish Linklater as the new Dean, Cipher, and Ethan Slater as school founder Thomas Godolkin.
Season 2 will directly tie into the events of The Boys Season 4 and even set up the upcoming final season. While exact plot details remain under wraps, it has been confirmed that Erin Moriarty will return as Annie January, also known as Starlight.
Prime Video’s official synopsis reads:
School is back in session. As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander’s iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it.
