Development on Constantine 2 has been quiet for months, but the star of the franchise has finally shared a positive update on the long-awaited sequel. While some fans thought James Gunn might have canceled the project at DC Studios, it looks like the supernatural film is still moving forward.
Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too.
In an interview with Fandango for his new movie, Good Fortune, Keanu Reeves gave an exciting update on Constantine 2
This likely means DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran will soon read the script and may approve it for production. Since the company is focusing on the DCU after Superman’s success, it is not clear if an Elseworlds project like Constantine will happen soon or later. Still, it would be hard to pass up bringing back director Francis Lawrence (The Long Walk) and Reeves for another supernatural story.

The first Constantine, released in 2005, stood out as a superhero film that wasn’t faithful to the comics but created its own take on the material. Directed by Lawrence, the visually striking film starred Reeves as the popular demon hunter with a smoking habit. Even though the DC character had several TV versions, he hasn’t appeared in theaters since then.

While DC Studios is prioritizing its shared universe, fans are still eager for Elseworlds projects that feel worth it, such as The Batman – Part II and Constantine 2.
The original Constantine had plenty of action but leaned more on horror and supernatural themes. Since it became a cult classic, a sequel once seemed unlikely, but now things look more hopeful. However, it appears the studio is not aiming to make a follow-up in the same style as the 2005 movie. Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the first film, recently shared that Keanu Reeves had problems with the studio wanting a more action-heavy script for Constantine 2.
It’s a lot of back and forth, because… I think Keanu [Reeves], which I know pretty good, is not so happy with the scripts and usually what comes out of the studios… Because the first one wasn’t that successful in the beginning, it became a sleeper and became a cult movie, and now it is one of the biggest cult movies ever. But to do a sequel, the studios want to have, you know, cars flying in the air. They want to have people doing flip-flops and fighting action scenes. And I think Keanu says, ‘I’ve done ‘John Wick.’ This movie is spiritual. It’s about demons and regular people. And I wanted to keep it that way.’ And we talked about that. I want to do God coming down exactly the same way, but in a black suit and looking more or less like Lucifer from the first one. I’m 12 years older, so it’s going to be hard to, you know, completely imitate the first movie. But, I think from Keanu, he wants to do a sequel that is very close to the first one.
With a new draft ready, it seems the project now has a script that Reeves feels better about making. Since he already stars in the John Wick franchise, it makes sense that he doesn’t want Constantine 2 to focus on action, especially with a fifth John Wick movie coming. Constantine 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but hopefully Warner Bros. and DC Studios will make a decision about it soon.
