The Conjuring: Last Rites has the longest runtime in the franchise in nine years. The main film series about Ed and Lorraine Warren has become a major horror favorite and inspired several spin-offs. The new movie, directed by Michael Chaves (The Devil Made Me Do It), comes out on September 5.
Last Rites is based on the real haunting of the Smurl family and follows Ed and Lorraine on their final paranormal case. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine, with Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Shannon Kook, Rebecca Calder, and John Brotherton also in the cast.
AMC Theatres lists the runtime as 2 hours and 15 minutes, making it the longest in the series. The Conjuring 2 was the only other movie to go over 2 hours, running 134 minutes, but Last Rites is slightly longer. Since it’s meant to be the Warrens’ farewell, the extra time might help give their story a satisfying ending.
| Every Movie in The Conjuring Universe | Runtime |
|---|---|
| The Conjuring | 112 minutes |
| Annabelle | 99 minutes |
| The Conjuring 2 | 134 minutes |
| Annabelle: Creation | 109 minutes |
| The Nun | 96 minutes |
| Annabelle Comes Home | 106 minutes |
| The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It | 112 minutes |
| The Nun II | 110 minutes |
| The Conjuring: Last Rites | 135 minutes |
A runtime over 2 hours could also mean the movie covers a complex case, like The Conjuring 2’s Enfield haunting. In the 1980s, the Smurl family claimed to face terrifying supernatural events in their Pennsylvania home before Ed and Lorraine stepped in. If the film includes several of these events, the longer runtime makes sense.
Last Rites stands out compared to other movies in the franchise. The Conjuring and The Devil Made Me Do It were under 2 hours, and the Annabelle movies are even shorter. Only The Conjuring 2 went past 120 minutes, and that was back in 2016. It will be interesting to see how much the new movie includes and how it balances the Warrens’ story with the haunting. With 2 hours and 15 minutes, it has room to build tension and give the Warrens a strong send-off.

The trailers promote this as the Warrens’ last case, and if this is the end of The Conjuring series, the longer runtime could mean the filmmakers took their time to make it feel complete. Whether it satisfies fans who have followed Ed and Lorraine’s journey will be clear when it releases.
