Cierra Ortega has addressed the public for the first time following her sudden departure from Love Island USA on July 6. While initially described as leaving for “personal reasons,” Ortega’s exit was linked to backlash over a resurfaced social media post in which she used a racial slur.

In an Instagram statement posted on July 9, Ortega offered an apology to the Asian community, stating, “I am deeply, truly, honestly so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain.”
She described the content as stemming from a time when she was “very naively using an incredibly offensive and derogatory term.” Ortega added, “I take accountability for using the word,” but emphasized that she only learned it was a slur after a follower informed her in 2024.

Since her removal, Ortega reported facing severe repercussions, including claims that ICE was called on her family. “They no longer feel safe in their own home,” she said.
She also disclosed that she has received death threats, adding, “I don’t think that’s justice. If you want to know that you are heard and that I’m sorry… I promise you, that’s what will happen.”
Public reactions to Ortega’s apology have been divided. While many expressed disappointment over her past remarks, others criticized the extreme backlash. One user wrote, “Calling ICE on her family is literally deranged behaviour.”
Another commenter stated, “If you aren’t Asian then you have no place to accept her apology.”
Meanwhile, supporters urged for grace and accountability, with one post reading, “People make mistakes and deserve the chance to grow.”
