Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, Christy, opened to disappointing numbers at the North American box office.
Directed by David Michôd and co-written by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, the 2025 sports drama tells the true story of former professional boxer Christy Martin. The film chronicles her rise to fame in the 1990s as one of America’s top female fighters, as well as the harrowing 2010 attempted murder by her trainer-turned-husband.
The cast also includes Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman. Christy premiered in the Special Presentations section at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5 and was released nationwide by Black Bear Pictures on November 7.
Despite a strong cast and compelling true-life premise, the film struggled to connect with audiences. According to Box Office Mojo, Christy earned just $600,000 on its opening Friday from 2,184 theaters, ranking #10 domestically and pointing toward an estimated $3 million weekend.
In an interview back in June, Sydney Sweeney shared her preparation process: “I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” she said. Her dedication to embodying the boxer’s physicality has drawn praise, but the performance wasn’t enough to drive ticket sales.

Overall, Christy stands as one of the weakest openings ever for a film released on more than 2,000 screens.
