Charlie Hunnam has revealed that he only signed on to Pacific Rim in order to work with director Guillermo del Toro – not because of any enthusiasm for giant robots or monsters.
I thought it was a great opportunity to work with a director that I really like. I couldn’t care less about giant robots fighting giant monsters. I read the script, and I had no emotional experience with it at all.
Hunnam told Variety when asked about the 2013 film.
Released in 2013, Pacific Rim became both a critical and commercial success, earning $410 million worldwide against a budget of $190 million. The story is set in a world where humanity is at war with Kaiju, using giant humanoid robots called Jaegers to defend the planet. Hunnam starred as Raleigh Becket, a former Jaeger pilot pulled out of retirement for a last-ditch mission to save the world. The film also featured Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day.
The success of Pacific Rim ultimately launched a franchise. A sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, was released in 2018, while Netflix ran an animated series, Pacific Rim: The Black, for two seasons from 2021 to 2022. A Netflix-exclusive prequel series was also announced last year.
Hunnam’s next project sees him step into darker territory with Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series. The actor will play serial killer Ed Gein – who inspired characters such as Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – in Monster: The Ed Gein Story, set to debut on Netflix on October 3.
