Pop icon Britney Spears was arrested in Ventura County, California, on Wednesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to law enforcement sources.
The singer was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 p.m. in Westlake Village, a community located near her home. Authorities later booked Spears at the county sheriff’s department shortly after 3 a.m., according to jail records.
Spears was released from custody at approximately 6 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Law enforcement officials said the “Toxic” singer was alone in her vehicle when officers pulled her over. Shortly after the stop, she was transported to a nearby hospital where medical staff conducted a blood draw to determine her blood alcohol level.
Sources indicated that Spears was not injured during the incident and that the hospital visit was solely for the blood alcohol test required in DUI investigations.
Representatives for Spears have not yet publicly commented on the arrest.
The incident comes shortly after the pop star secured a legal victory in a separate matter involving a restraining order. A judge recently granted Spears a permanent restraining order against a Louisiana man who allegedly appeared at her Los Angeles-area home after sharing several disturbing posts on social media.
Spears has previously faced legal issues related to driving. In 2007, she was charged with misdemeanor counts connected to an alleged hit-and-run involving a parked car in Los Angeles. Those charges were eventually dropped after Spears compensated the vehicle’s owner for damages.
Around the same period, Spears also lost custody of her two sons with former husband Kevin Federline following a series of highly publicized personal struggles.
