Netflix’s breakout British drama Adolescence is making waves and history.
The limited series, which debuted less than a month ago, has skyrocketed to No. 4 on Netflix’s Most Popular English TV list, according to the streamer’s latest rankings released Tuesday. With more than 114 million views to date—17.8 million of those just last week—Adolescence has officially leapfrogged heavy hitters like Bridgerton (Seasons 1 and 3), The Queen’s Gambit, Fool Me Once, and The Night Agent (Season 1).
The series dominated the weekly charts once again, outperforming new titles like Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer and medical drama Pulse, both of which premiered last week.
One surprising factor contributing to the show’s continued momentum? Adolescence is now available to stream in secondary schools across the U.K., helping to push viewership numbers even higher.
The gripping drama tells the story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper), whose life and that of his family is turned upside down when he is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl at his school. Stephen Graham stars as Jamie’s father, Eddie Miller, who also serves as his “appropriate adult” during police questioning.
The cast also includes Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe and Erin Doherty as Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case.
Created and written by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne (The Swimmers, Joy), Adolescence reunites Graham with director Philip Barantini, his collaborator on the critically acclaimed film Boiling Point.
The project brings together a powerhouse team of executive producers, including Mark Herbert and Emily Feller for Warp Films, Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters for Matriarch Productions, Jack Thorne for One Shoe Films, and Philip Barantini for It’s All Made Up Productions. The series also boasts big-name backing from Plan B Entertainment with Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, and Nina Wolarsky attached as executive producers.
Co-executive producers include Carina Sposato (Plan B), Peter Balm, and Niall Shamma (Warp Films), while Jo Johnson serves as producer.
With critical acclaim, record-breaking numbers, and educational accessibility, Adolescence has quickly grown from a buzzy debut to one of Netflix’s biggest original drama hits proving that this coming-of-age crime thriller is anything but ordinary.
